Please answer the questions below

1. Why is translation theory important?

2. What representative authors do you know in the translation field?

  1. I know about a very interesting one. He's Umberto Eco, an Italian writer who is an expert in Semiotics (the study of the signs.)He says that semiotics is “a scientific attitude, a critical way of looking at the objects of other sciences.” He's written a lot of books, but the two most popular of them are "The Name of the Rose" and "Translation Experiences." The last one is divided into two parts. The first part, "Translating and Being Translated," is the more interesting and will appeal to both experienced and fledgling translators. The second one, "Translation and Interpretation," deals with semiotics and seems aimed more at specialists.

Eco says that Translation is not about comparing two languages, but about the interpretation of a text in two different languages, thus involving a shift between cultures.

Currently, Umberto Eco is President of the Scuola Superiore di Studi Umanistici, University of Bologna.

  2. I know an author specialized in legal translation; her name is Anabel Borja Albi, she is from Spain. Research by Professor Borja has turned basically on three aspects: legal translation, legal language and the teaching of translation. She has participated in funded research projects. Currently her research interests are specified in the analysis and classifications of legal genres and their translations

  3. Talking about authors I am familiar with many of them but I am going to refer to Harris and Sherwood; their point of view about translation has been criticized a lot because they say that translation is an inner ability that any person can have; they say that you don't need to have a master degree to translate, instead of that, they say it is a natural skill you develop throug the time. Therefore, it is a very criticized viewpoint.

  5. About the first question, i think that theory is really important since theory gives us the bases, knowledge and arguments at the the time of translating. It allows us to know why we do what we do. Through theory, we are able to apply techniques, strategies and methods in order to do an adequate translation. In short, theory gives us the tools to improve at the time of translating.

  6. I know about some of them such as Katharina Reiss, Jhon Catford and Roberto Mayoral, but I would like to refer to Wolfram Wilss who considered that a translation is like a bridge or mediator between the source language and the target language. For him, a translator should have a lot of knowledge about both cultures; so, his role is intercultural.

  7. 1. Translation theory is really important because because it sets the foundation and it works as a guideline of what should be done during a translation process, it is also relevant because it teaches us the best ways and tools to do an adequate translation, because we all know that fluency in a language is not enough to be a translator.

    2. Talking about authors, i know lots of them, but this time I’m going to refer to Roman Jakobson: He was a Russian linguist and literary theorist whose work on translation “on linguistic aspects of translation” (1959) stressed the difference between the kinds of translation:
1 Intralingual translation or rewording is an interpretation of verbal signs by means of other signs of the same language.
2 Interlingual translation or translation proper is an interpretation of verbal signs by means of some other language.
3 Intersemiotic translation or transmutation is an interpretation of verbal signs by means of signs of nonverbal sign systems.

  9. María Teresa Cabré Castellvi

She is an expert in terminology graduated from the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona, Spain. She is the author of the Communicative Theory of Translation which states that every term means something different depending on the field it is used, which is the contrary to what proposes Eugene Buster who said that every terms means the same in every field.

  10. Regarding with the authors who speak about translation, I know lots of them but this time I will talk about Christiane Nord. She made a book called Text analysis in translation: theory, methodology, and didactic application of a model for translation-oriented text analysis. On this book she spoke about the skopos which for her means the intention of the translation. She points out that the intention determines the structure of the text according to its content and form to make a consistent, cohesive and appropriate translation. Also she states that there are 5 types of intention that would help you to define the skopos of your translation. These intentions are: the zero intention, informative intention, expressive intention, argumentative intention and the phatic intention

  12. about the authors,

I know Emma Camacho Rodriguez who was the creator of Eduterm which is a group of investigation that states that the work of translation and interpretation is no longer conceding without the help of electronic tools and electronic data. Terminology makes easier the work of a translator.

  13. Translation theory is very important because we need to know first what the meaning of this term is and what it really is before trying to do a translation. Also, we need the theory to know how we can improve as a future translator and what kind of sources we can use for doing an adequate translation.

  14. I know about several authors such as Christiane Nord, Wolfram Wilss, Eugen Wuster, Ada Franzoni, etc, but in this case I am only going to refer to Ada Franzoni since for me she is an interesting author to talk about. She is a legal translator, and she says that legal translation is not only between two languages but also between two legal systems since legal translators have to know not only about the linguistic part of both languages, but also about the legal systems of both of them. That is why, she is very important in the legal translation field since she has done very important contributions to it.

  15. I know an important author who made some contributions to the translation field, she is Katharina Reiss who present the different text types. It is important to learn about all of them in order to made an adequate translation. some of them are: content focused text, form focused text, audio medial text. etc

  16. The translation theory is important because it is the base to support any translation with strong arguments that give credibility to the work.About the second question, I know a lot of them, but I'm going to refer to Eugen Wuster who was the Father of general theory of terminology and who considered that every term means the same thing in every field.although this theory is different to Maria Teresa cabre's terminology theory.

  17. 1- There are different translation theories that can help translators in many ways. Each of them give us different aspects, points of view, perspectives and definitions about this field. Those theories are very important because it can help translators to guide them at the time to do a translation.

2- Peter neowmark is an english professor of translation at the University of Surrey in USA. He had written many important books; for example, paragraphs of translation 1989, About Translation 1991 among others. He thinks that translation is a craft because we can use our creativity in order to do better translations. Also, he classifies texts in three categories as Scientific- Technological, Cultural- Institutional and Literay texts. Besides, he defines different types of words as Functional, Technical, Common, Institutional, Lexical, and concept words. But the most important aspect is that he defines two types of translation: semantic and communicative translation.

  18. Theory is important for all the fields, we cannot make a procedure if we do not know the theory. In translation, theory is really important because it shows us the adequate way to make an excellent translation. Besides, it teaches us the appropriate tools and techniques to develop an easier job.

  19. Translation theory is really important at the moment of translating because we need to know all the theories, strategies, techniques, methods etc to make an adequate translation. Also, if we know the theory, we can identify the differences among some types of translation

  20. Translation theory is important because it provides the foundations upon we can stand in order to do an adequate translation. If we take into consideration all theoretical aspects concerning translation field, then we can be effective and precise doing so.

  21. I have learned about different authors, but I am only going to talk about Hans Joseph Vermeer who was the founder of the Skopos theory in 1996, which consists of translating a text in different ways depending on the purpose. Also, he played an important role in shaping translation studies as they stand today.

  22. According to Eugene Nida The translation theories represent the different orientations which provide helpful insight, and diverse ways of talking about how a message can be transferred from one language to another. Then, in the process of translating should exist different theories because as all translators are different ; they need a variety of them to choose the one they feel identified or confortable with.

Vinay and Darbelnet understood that in the equivalence shifts are obligatory due to differences between SL and TL ; for that reason, they proposed the Translation procedures in order to maintain the stylistic impact of the SL text in the TL text. They are :(Borrowing, calque. literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalence and adaptation). According to them, equivalence is therefore the ideal method when the translator has to deal with proverbs, idioms, sayings, nominal or adjectival phrases or the onomatopoeia of animal sounds. Then, some translations may result from a cluster of procedures.

  23. It is really important to know about translation theory because it is the foundation of the process. In here we can find many aspects, tools, basis and procedures that need to be taken into account at the moment of making an adequate translation.

  24. It is important because the theory is the basis of translation, so with that is that the translator is going to support any work and give credibility to it.

  25. After, I started a formal study about translation, this study allowed to me to know that the process of translation not only means reading, understanding a text and translate it into another language. I realized that there is a translation theory which not only disclosed a method, but also a different point of view about the process of translation and how it became in a tool that helped me to make a more efficient work. Also, translation theory allows to know that each part of the process is important in order to not lose our final goal with our translation and the reason for what we are doing that translation. Besides, translation theory helps to identify the differences between some types of translations. Lastly I can say that translation theory allows us to be competitive in a difficult market because we can show with evidences such as what type of text is and what is the intention of the author of the text; and others aspects related to the translation.

  26. During the translation classes, I have known many important authors like, Anabel Borja, umberto Eco,Christiane Nord, Wolfram Wilss among others. However, the author that I like the most is called Amparo Hurtado Albir. she is a traductology and she stated that every translator has to be updated regarding imformation as well as tools to make translations. Albir affirmed that translations get older. for this reason, translators have to go forward with the process.

  27. Translation theory is very important because it is like a guide that translators can use at the moment of doing an adequate translation since through the theory, translators learn about the methods that can be used in certain texts since there are many authors who recommends certain methods for certain texts; it means that the method used in a translation depends on the kind of text that has to be translated. Also, through the theory they learn about the procedure and the techniques that can be used in a translation. In other words, the theory is the base for doing an adequate translation and without it is not possible.

  28. The theory of translation is very significant because it gives us the arguments, bases and information in order to make a translation or interpretation in a adequate form. This theory also help us to choose what strategies or techniques follow at the time of translating.

  29. Translation theory is important because it gives to the translator/interpreter the basis for creating an adequate job due to the fact that the experience is not enough for being an integral professional.

  30. The translation theory itself is really significant because it pretends that translators' ideas could have strong bases at the time to do an adequate translation.

I know lot of authors who have done a great job in translation field, but I am going to talk about Gideon Toury. He is a professor of comparative literature and Translation at Tel Aviv University. Toury is one of the main pioneers of translation since he was one of the first authors in establishing a theory of translation and talking about it as a discipline. Moreover, his work has been focused in the use of certain norms, not only from the target language but also from the target culture, in order to have an adequate translation. For him, the translator is an individual of a social community who performs under different conditions and for different audiences, often adopts different strategies and ultimately comes up with different products.

  31. Vásquez Ayora, a translator from spain. According to him, translation has to do with semantics, the contex, the meaning and intention of the author. He wrote a book called "Introduccion a la Traductología" which is a basic course about some theorethical and practical aspects of translation. Besides, it is mainly focused on the modern linguistic perspective. It also offers important explanation and description about the fenomena and methods of tranlation.

  32. As we had the opportunity to have a quick look at several authors, by now I’m inclined toward the ideas of Wolfram Wills, Umberto Eco, M. Teresa Cabré, Amparo Hurtado and, above all, Michael Alexander Kirkwood Halliday. He is a British linguist who has made important contributions to this field. Basically, a key concept in Halliday’s approach is the “context of situation”, he stresses the need for a look into the context in which a text is produced while analyzing or interpreting it. In plain English, we have to move outside the text to engage with the “context of situation” or that of culture, both of which the translator has to take into account if we want to have satisfactory results.
